Gigondas

Encircled by medieval ramparts, this is one of the most picturesque of the perched villages of the former principality of Orange. Gigondas stands against the backdrop of the Dentelles de Montmirail, the mountains that form part of the territory of this village.

Formerly within the Principality of Orange, Gigondas is a picturesque village surrounded by ramparts dating from the Middle Ages. The Dentelles de Montmirail serve as its background. See the 12th c. Chapel of Saint-Cosme with its beautiful Romans apses, the Chambre de Turc and the summit of the Dentelles (696 m.).There are visits of the old town the castle and the ramparts. Gigondas wine is a critically acclaimed world-famous vintage. The vineyards that produce this great wine on the side of the Dentelles de Montmirail benefit from a southern climate, dry with a lot of sun. The reds and rosés from Gigondas are excellent. These are hearty, full-bodied wines with a beautiful purple robe and great elegance. Gigondas wines go beautifully with red meats, game and cheese. There are several estates and wine cellars in and around the town. Sports in Gigondas include a climbing school in the Dentelles, hikers' lodging at the entrance to the town, footpaths, bridal paths and mountain bike paths, basketball, handball, and tennis courts.
