Sault, from the Latin Saltus - a wooded region - was well populated in prehistoric times, from the early Mousterian period to the Late Stone Age.

In pre-Roman times the whole region was occupied by the tribe known as the Albici/Albiens or even Albiques, which took its name from Alba - the White Country - today known as "pays d'Albion".
